Tiny Nuclear Reactors Are Coming to Army Bases. AI Data Centers Could Be Next.
A tiny trend is taking off in nuclear energy, and it just got a big assist from the government.
America’s 94 existing nuclear reactors are behemoths, with many of them able to power 1 million homes each. Now companies are looking to miniaturize the industry – building reactors that can fit on the back of a truck and power 500 to 1,000 homes, or industrial and government sites.
So-called microreactors got their latest boost late on Wednesday, when the U.S. Army selected five companies to build mini-reactors at Army bases across the country, with the first one switching on as soon as September 2028.
