Options volume pops on OSI Systems as shares drop

OSIS – OSI Systems, Inc. – Options volume on OSI Systems today is well above the average daily level for the stock, with upwards of 7,500 contracts in play as of midday in New York versus average daily volume of 57 contracts.  The surge in options trading on OSI Systems coincides with a 40% decline in the price of the underlying shares to $39.00 today, the lowest level since October of 2011. The company provided an update on a recent $60 million order cancellation by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Call options are more active than puts, with the call/put ratio hovering near 2.0 as of 12:40 p.m. EST. Some traders appear to be selling out of the money December and January 2014 expiry calls, while others step in to buy the contracts perhaps in the expectation that shares rebound in the near future.

Options Traders Pounce On Overstock.com Calls As Shares Extend Rally

Today’s tickers: OSTK, COF & OSIS

OSTK - Overstock.com, Inc. – Shares in Overstock.com, Inc. are spiking for a second-consecutive session, helped higher today by an upgrade to ‘buy’ from ‘underperform’ at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch. The off-price online retailer rallied 22% to $19.25 this morning, adding to the 36% increase in the price of the underlying during Thursday’s trading session following the company’s better-than-expected first-quarter earnings report released ahead of the open yesterday. Options changing hands on Overstock.com indicate some traders are positioning for shares to extend gains in the near term. Upwards of 1,500 calls have traded at the May $20 strike versus zero open interest, with much of the volume purchased in the early going at an average premium of $0.48 apiece. Call buyers stand ready to profit at expiration should shares in OSTK settle above the average breakeven price of $20.48. Fresh interest is also on the rise in the $20 strike call options expiring in June and September. Positions established in the April $15 strike call and put options yesterday are generating profits for some options players today. Open interest in the $15 strike puts jumped by around 860 contracts overnight, and a review of Thursday’s trading activity indicates most of the puts were sold at a premium of $0.30 each. The puts are now far out-of-the-money, suggesting put sellers are likely to walk away with the full amount of premium received at expiration. Finally, April $15 strike calls purchased yesterday at $0.24 each are today changing hands at $3.90 apiece as of the time of this writing.

COF - Capital One Financial Corp. – Trading traffic in weekly call options on Capital One suggests one or more traders are gearing up for shares in the name to extend gains in the near term. Shares in COF are up more than 6.0% in early afternoon trading to stand at $56.10 after the company reported first-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst expectations following the close of trading on Thursday. Upside call buying in the weeklys…

Calls Hot on OSI Systems After Failed Terror plot

Today’s tickers: OSIS, SEED, AMZN, KONG & TER

OSIS – OSI Systems Inc. – Investors were keen to put a name on the company that might benefit from a boost to security spending, which is behind the 12.5% rally in shares of OSI Systems today to $28.22. The previous 52-week high stood at $25.64 in the California-based company that makes critical electronic gadgetry to include complex security and inspection systems. The fallout from the Christmas Day arrest of a young Nigerian who apparently attempted to set off an explosive device on a Detroit-bound airplane is fast trickling through to who might win orders from the office of homeland security. Option volume in OSI Systems is a rare thing as indicated by the scant vale of open interest at 4,341 lots. Call option buyers at the January expiration saw to it that the company remains on investors’ radar after they likely doubled the prevailing number of option positions on Wednesday. Some 4,700 calls at the $30 strike were bought starting at 25 cents per contract and rising to as much as $1.00 each as the shares rose in value. The delta reading of 33% implies a one-in-three chance that the share price will rise by a further 6.3% within the next 18 days.

SEED – Origin Agritech – There was a wave of call option activity at Origin Agritech following the technology-focused seed development company’s announcement that it had bought back the remainder of its outstanding notes. The move will probably strengthen its balance sheet and helped spur its share price 25% higher to $12.15. Last month the stock rose to about $15 after the Chinese government said it would work with the company to grow modified corn and rice. Heaviest call volume was seen at the January $12.5 strike where 4,400 lots have traded from Tuesday’s close of 10 cents to 90 cents. The $15 strike calls have traded 1,600 times at an unchanged 30 cents. Option implied volatility spiked from 80% to 103% as uncertainty grew as investors demanded higher premiums to sell options. At the January 10 strike investors appeared swift to sell more than 4,000 put options as low as 40 cents, down from Tuesday’s closing price of $1.10 in the expectation that Origin will remain firm.

AMZN – Amazon Inc. – One investor appeared to take out some protection against a possible decline in shares of…

This chart looks at the Russell 2000 over the past 30-years, where it has spent the majority of that time, inside of rising channel (A).

This chart reflects that the long-term trend in small caps remains higher. Weakness this year has it testing rising support tied to the 2009 lows at (1).

Joe Friday Just The Facts Ma’am- If the Russell breaks below support at (1), it could work its way over time to channel support at (2), which is currently around 20% below current prices.

Very important support test in play ...

Golds Xmas Gift

Courtesy of Read the Ticker.

Three things have tweaked the fundamentals for gold.

1) Bitcoin is not attracting the hot cash, unlike 2016.

2) Fed's Powell dovish switch, now less expectations for interest rate hikes in 2019.

3) China to import more goods from the USA, hence more US Dollars required.

The question now is will this move gold back to resistance before year end?

Gann angles look good, cycle looks attractive, now we wait for volume and a price to break into new ground. Profits could be golden for Xmas.

Cheri Jacobus on Politics with PSW

Cheri Jacobus is a widely known political consultant, pundit, writer and outspoken former Republican and frequent guest on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, CBS.com, CNBC and C-Span. Cheri shared her thoughts about the current political environment with us in our August interview, and now we’re following up.

Ilene: Is there a take-home message from election results of 2018?

Cheri: Yes. No political party can survive when it appeals to only one demographic. The GOP has ignored all of the lessons of recent elections that showed they needed to appeal to African-Americans, Latinos, and women.

Ilene: Do you feel the Democrats ...
