Calls On TAP

Options on Molson Coors Brewing Co. (Ticker: TAP) are seeing heavy trading again today on speculation the company may buy MillerCoors, a joint venture between Molson Coors and SABMiller. The stock was also helped to fresh record highs today after BofAML upgraded the stock to ‘Buy’ from ‘Underperform’ and raised their price target on the stock to $80.00 from $55.00. Shares in Molson Coors earlier today rose as much as 2.25% to touch a record high of $72.30.

The most traded options contracts on TAP today are the Oct 75.0 strike calls, with upwards of 17,000 calls changing hands against open interest of 2,278 contracts. The single largest print was a block of 9,500 of the 75.0 strike calls, which appears to have been purchased at a premium of $1.85 per contract. The calls look for shares in Molson Coors to rise another 7.0% over the current price of $72.00 to top the breakeven price of $76.85 by October expiration. Overall volume in TAP options is nearing 35,000 contracts heading into the close, which is roughly 1,500% of average daily options volume of around 2,300 contracts.

Options Gear Up For Intel Rally

Today’s tickers: INTC, AOL & TAP

INTC - Intel Corp. – Shares in Intel kicked off the trading session in negative territory on Wednesday morning, declining as much as 1.1% versus a 0.65% decline in the S&P 500 Index in the early going. U.S. stocks have since halved earlier losses and Intel’s shares are moving higher, up 0.65% on the session at $21.90 as of 10:50 a.m. ET. Heavy trading traffic in June expiry calls near the start of the trading day suggests one strategist is positioning for shares in Intel Corp. to rally during the next few months. Upwards of 27,000 calls have changed hands at the Jun. $23 strike versus open interest of 10,898 contracts. It looks like most of the volume was purchased at an average premium of $0.26 apiece, including the single-largest print of 15,988 calls traded. The bullish bet on INTC is working this morning, with premium required to purchase the Jun. $23 strike calls up more than 30% over the $0.26 in premium paid this morning to stand at $0.35 each as of 11:00 a.m. in New York. Profits are available on the strategy at June expiration in the event that Intel’s shares rise 6.0% over the current price of $21.90 to surpass the average breakeven point at $23.26. Intel’s first-quarter earnings report is less than three weeks away, scheduled for release after the closing bell on April 16th.

AOL - AOL, Inc. – Options are changing hands at a clip on the online content, products and services provider this morning, with shares in AOL rising sharply following an upgrade to ‘Overweight’ from ‘Equal Weight’ with a target price increase to $44.00 from $38.00 at Barclays. Shares in AOL rallied as much as 9.5% during the first half of the session to $39.62. Traders anticipating additional near-term gains in the price of the underlying shares purchased front month call options on the stock this morning. It looks like buyers stepped in to buy contracts across the April $37, $38, $39, $40 and…

Molson Coors Shares Fizzle After Earnings Amid Down-Day For Stocks

Today’s tickers: TAP, PFE & CIEN

TAP - Molson Coors Brewing Company – Shares in the beer brewing company are on the decline today, joining the broad-based sell-off in equities as investors re-focus attention on the debt crisis in Europe and looming fiscal cliff in the U.S. with the conclusion of Tuesday’s Presidential election. Molson Coors shares are down roughly 4% as of 12:10 p.m. ET to stand at $41.48 after the company reported better-than-expected third-quarter profits, but missed revenue estimates, ahead of the opening bell this morning. One or more options traders appear to be bracing for further declines in the price of the underlying shares during the five months. It looks like strategists purchased more than 1,000 puts at the April 2013 $40 strike for an average premium of $1.90 per contract. The bearish puts may be profitable at expiration if TAP’s shares drop more than 8% from the current level to breach the average breakeven price of $38.10 at expiration next year. Shares in Molson Coors Brewing Co. last traded below $38.10 in June.

PFE - Pfizer, Inc. – Pharmaceuticals giant, Pfizer, Inc., is trading well off its lowest level of the session at present, down 0.95% at $24.26 as of 12:40 p.m. ET after earlier sliding as much as 2% to an intraday low of $23.99 on Wednesday morning. Heavy trading traffic in weekly options with two full trading sessions remaining to expiration indicates short-term bets on the stock are looking for shares to move. The bulk of the volume is in weekly calls looking for a quick rebound in the price of the underlying, though buyers did generate some traffic in the weekly puts as well. Weekly options volume is greatest in the Nov. 09 ’12 $25 strike call where upwards of 9,700 lots changed hands against open interest of 6,548 contracts. Most of the calls in play this morning appear to have been purchased for an average premium of…

Testy Tuesday – Faber Says US Treasuries Are Junk

"If the US were a corporation, it would have bonds that are junk rated."

That's the word from Marc Faber but, then again, his column is called the "Gloom, Boom, Doom Report" so he is very much talking his book.  Faber makes the case that our unfunded liabilities make the US a toxic investment, much the way GM health and pension obligations.  The US ended up bailing out GM but who can bail out the US?   Faber argues that additional debt growth no longer has the ability to add to GDP growth, meaning we have passed a tipping point where we have no choice but to pay off existing debt (most likely through inflation) or default

Pragmatic Capitalist has a great article discussing total debt to GDP and, yes, we all need to be very concerned but our debt to GDP is up at levels we hit in the Great Depression – that was 80 years ago and the US is still standing!  While I don't advocate dismissing these issues, I do want to point out that these issues are always with us and the MSM has gone from completely ignoring them (our Meatball Market of January) to focusing on nothing but.  Suddenly Faber, Roubini and various bond pimps have center stage and the gold bugs are trying to pull the last group of suckers into that tent with scary stories about the imminent collapse of the USA, as if having a share of an ETF that says it holds some gold somewhere is going to do you any good when your broker goes dark in the predicted economic catastrophe.

The reason gold has been a valuable alternative to currency throughout human history is that it has a high value to weight ratio – Try loading up the SUV with a pound of gold ($17,088) or 235, 42-gallon barrels of oil and you'll see what I mean.  Gold's value as a currency hedge is that it's readily exchangeable anywhere in the world for cash.  While it may make some sense for the bomb-shelter crowd to store some bullion along with the beans – what edge do you think you're getting with a certificate that says you own a share of an ETF that stores some gold somewhere?

If the US economy implodes and the market collapses – where

Vale Options Bulls Continue to Charge as Shares Slumber

Today’s tickers: VALE, AMZN, TAP, FDO, SYMC, MON, MFA & TLB

VALE - Option traders set up long-term bullish trades across several contracts on the world’s largest iron-ore producer. Shares edged 0.25% lower this afternoon to $23.82 despite the upgrade to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’ and the increase in target price to $31.00 from $25.00, at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. One investor reeled in profits by closing out an existing short put position. He originally sold 6,500 puts at the March 23 strike for a premium of 3.35 apiece. Today he made a closing purchase of all the contracts for 2.40 each. Net profits on the transaction amount to 95 cents each or total gains of $617,500. Next, it seems the same investor initiated a new bullish stance on the stock by employing the same short-put strategy at the January 2011 22.5 strike where he sold 6,500 puts for 4.00 per contract. The next optimistic transaction today was a bullish risk reversal. One investor shed 10,000 puts at the January 2011 20 strike for 2.87 each in order to partially finance the purchase of 10,000 calls at the January 25 strike for 4.00 per contract. The net cost of the reversal amounts to 1.13. Thus, profits are available on the trade if VALE’s shares rally a minimum of 10% by expiration, to surpass the breakeven price of $26.13. – Vale S.A. –

AMZN - Shares of e-tailer, Amazon.com, are up 3% to $93.61. A bullish risk reversal in the November contract today suggests at least one option trader expects to see significant near-term gains in the stock by expiration. The reversal involved the sale of 5,000 puts at the November 80 strike for an average premium of 1.80 apiece. The short sale of the put options partially financed the purchase of 5,000 calls at the November 105 strike for 2.30 each. The net cost of the trade amounts to 50 cents per contract. If the investor is to accumulate profits by expiration, shares of AMZN must add at least 13% to the current price to breach the breakeven point at $105.50. – Amazon.com, Inc. –

TAP - The beer brewing company appeared on our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner due to bearish options action in the January 2011 contract. Shares edged 0.5% higher during the trading session to $49.52. The investor responsible for the trade sold 5,000 calls at the January 55…

Citron Research Presents Peloton – Investors Peddling Themselves into Frenzy

2020 Target Price – $5

Before we even start with the narrative, we are obligated to show the only chart that matters.

Unless Peloton invents a piece of equipment that works out for you – this is going to $5 (which is still a $1BN-$2BN market cap).

Looking back over the past 5 years, one of the biggest trading regrets held by Citron was not being more aggressive and staying short GoPro from the article we published in late 2014.

While Wall St was giddy over the new “must-have product”, Citron maintained that GoPro sold a consumer electronics device that would eventually show decelerating growth...

Global stocks, US equity futures, 10Y TSY yields and the US dollar dropped for a second day on Tuesday, amid what conventional wisdom said was "caution over a Dec. 15 deadline for the next round of U.S. tariffs" as well as looming Fed and ECB meetings and UK elections (although the real risk factor is the repo market as we will discuss shortly).

Following their counterparts in Asia, European shares fell again, with the Stoxx 600 index down over 1%  on course for its bigges...

Chart Shows the Fed Ramping Up Not QE – Funding Almost All Treasury Issuance

The Fed is ramping up “Not QE” .

The Fed bought $2.2 billion in notes today in its POMO, “not QE,” operations. Actually $2.15 billion because they sold back a whole $50 million. Must have been a little glitch in the force.

This brings the Fed’s total outright purchases of Treasuries to $170 billion since it started Not QE, on September 17.

It also did $107 billion in gross new repo loans to Primary Dealers to buy Tre...

Sacha Baron Cohen Uses ADL Speech to Tear Apart Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook

By Matt Wilstein

Excerpt:

Sacha Baron Cohen accepted the International Leadership Award at the Anti-Defamation League’s Never is Now summit on anti-Semitism and hate Thursday. And the comedian and actor used his keynote speech to single out the one Jewish-American who he believes is doing the most to facilitate “hate and violence” in America: Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

He began with a joke at the Trump administration’s expense. “Thank you, ADL, for this recognition and your work in fighting racism, hate and bigotry,” Baron Cohen said, according to his prepared...

VIX Warns Of Imminent Market Correction

Courtesy of Technical Traders

The VIX is warning that a market peak may be setting up in the global markets and that investors should be cautious of the extremely low price in the VIX. These extremely low prices in the VIX are typically followed by some type of increased volatility in the markets.

The US Federal Reserve continues to push an easy money policy and has recently begun acquiring more dept allowing a deeper move towards a Quantitative Easing stance. This move, along with investor confidence in the US markets, has prompted early warning signs that the market has reached near extreme levels/peaks.
