Louisiana Pacific Put Options Active

LPX – Louisiana Pacific Corporation – Shares in the manufacturer of engineered wood building materials are sprinting higher on Thursday, rallying nearly 15% during morning trading to an intraday high of $17.47, after Louisiana Pacific yesterday announced it will acquire Ainsworth Lumber Co. for C$3.76 per Ainsworth common share in a deal valued at approximately USD $1.1 billion, according to a press release issued by the company. LPX was raised to ‘Buy’ from ‘Neutral’ at DA Davidson with a 12-month target price of $20.00 a share today. Trading in November expiry put options this morning suggests one trader may be unraveling a sizable long position in the contracts. Roughly 10,000 of the Nov $16 puts appear to have been sold this morning at an average premium of $0.81 each against open interest of 10,342 contracts. Time and sales data indicates most of the open contracts were purchased at a volume-weighted average price of $1.65 between August 13th and August 21st. The sale of the puts this morning could represent the unraveling of the long put position following the sharp move in the price of the underlying today.

TWI – Titan International, Inc. – Put options purchased on the maker of wheels and tires for off-the-road equipment used in the agriculture, construction, forestry and mining industries this morning look for shares in Titan International to slump to fresh 52-week lows during the next six weeks. Shares today are in positive territory at present, up 0.20% at $16.05 as of 11:55 a.m. ET, though the stock is down more than 20% since this time last year. One trader stepped in to buy 1,000 of the Oct $15 puts during the first 15 minutes of the session, paying a premium of $0.55 for most of the contracts. The put options may be profitable at expiration next month in the event that shares in Titan International decline 10% from the current price to trade below the breakeven point at $14.45. The stock last traded below $14.45 in October of 2011.

Bullish Predictions Payoff For Skechers Call Buyers

Today’s tickers: SKX, RCL, OSK & TWI

SKX - Skechers USA, Inc. – The footwear designer’s decision to purge inventory of some 2 million pairs of its Shape-ups sneakers in exchange for a $21 million loss pleased investors reviewing the somewhat ugly second-quarter earnings report released from Skechers USA on Wednesday. Shares in the Manhattan Beach, CA-based company sky-rocketed 25.0% on Thursday morning to an intraday high of $17.88 despite the shoe retailer’s reported net loss of $0.62 a share on 14% lower revenue for the quarter. Steps taken by the company to clear out inventory as well as promising international growth prospects seem to have overshadowed weaker-than-expected top- and bottom-line results. Bullish momentum in the shares was also aided by an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets who raised Skechers to ‘Buy’ from ‘Hold’ with a 12-month target share price of $18.00.

On Monday we noted bullish call buying taking place in the September and October contracts, and suggested traders long those calls may benefit from a post-earnings pop in the price of the underlying. Lo-and-behold, shares are soaring and some investors have seen the value of their positions more than double this week. For example, traders purchased around 2,200 October $15 strike calls on Monday for an average premium of $1.07 apiece. Today investors could turn around and sell those calls for an average premium of $2.65 a-pop, or hold onto their positions in the hope that shares continue to rally in the next few months. Like-minded bulls picked up around 500 of the September $15 strike calls on Monday at an average premium of $0.85 each, while the last-traded price on the contract now stands at $2.35.…

We reported over the weekend that Israel has mustered its largest build-up of tanks and armored personnel carriers since 2014 at a deployment area along the border with Gaza and that "all-out war" looks inevitable after weeks of heightened tensions with Hamas. This after special UN envoy for the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov late last week warned the UN Secur...

Short the S&P 500 and Go Long Gold Miners Time?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

The precious metals sector continues to be a “grind”, offering a few trades but mostly sideways to lower action. Gold prices have slogged along and this had held the Gold Miners (NYSEARCA:GDX) back… until recently.  The Gold Miners (GDX) and the broader Gold & Silver Miners Index (XAU) came to life in September and October.

The miners are in a multi-year down trend, however there is a potential bullish setup in place. See the chart below where we highlight the ratio of the Mining Index (XAU) to the S&P 500 (SPY). The ratio, which Gold Bugs want to see rising, looks to have created a bullish reversal last month at the 2016 lows at point (1).

And October is seeing a follow-through move...

Weekly Market Recap Oct 21, 2018

Courtesy of Blain.

After the heavy selling the week prior there was sure to be an oversold bounce and indeed last Tuesday brought much of that.  It is always interesting to see what happens after that bounce – often in this bull market, once the indexes turn back up they move like a freight train.  This time – thus far at least – the action has been less aggressive.  Selling on Thursday took the S&P 500 right back down to the 200 day moving average and rally attempts Friday were fruitless.  In whole the S&P 500 barely budged for the week.

Yields on the 10 year have thus far held their own “breakout” level:

The Chinese market had an interesting Friday with an “...

Vilas Fund Up 55% In Q3; 3Q18 Letter: A Bull Market In Bearish Forecasts

By Jacob Wolinsky. Originally published at ValueWalk.

The Vilas Fund, LP letter for the third quarter ended September 30, 2018; titled, “A Bull Market in Bearish Forecasts.”

Ever since the financial crisis, there has been a huge fascination with predictions of the next “big crash” right around the next corner. Whether it is Greece, Italy, Chinese debt, the “overvalued” stock market, the Shiller Ratio, Puerto Rico, underfunded pensions in Illinois and New Jersey, the Fed (both for QE a few years ago and now for removing QE), rising interest rates, Federal budget deficits, peaking profit margins, etc...

Mapping The Market

Mistakes were Made. (And, Yes, by Me.)

Via Jean-Luc:

Famed investor reflecting on his mistakes:

Mistakes were Made. (And, Yes, by Me.)

One that stands out for me:

Instead of focusing on how value factors in general did in identifying attractive stocks, I rushed to proclaim price-to-sales the winner. That was, until it wasn’t. I guess there’s a reason for the proclamation “The king is dead, long live the king” when a monarchy changes hands. As we continued to update the book, price-to-sales was no longer the “best” single value factor, replaced by others, depending upon the time frames examined. I had also become a lot more sophisticated in my analysis—thanks to criticism of my earlier work—and realized that everything, including factors, moves in and out of favor, depending upon the market environment. I also realized...
