BP Options Abuzz Ahead of News Conference

Today’s tickers: BP, WFT, ITT, AMR, OLN, VRGY & NANO

BP - BP PLC – Options volume, options implied volatility and the value of shares in BP are on the rise ahead of a press conference in which the oil company will reportedly shed light on a possible deal with the Russian state-controlled oil company, Rosneft. Volume in options traded on BP is fast approaching 270,000 in the final 30 minutes of the session, with shares in the name having rallied as much as 4.1% to touch an intraday- and more than 6-month high of $49.50. The overall reading of options implied volatility on the stock continues to climb as well, currently standing 30.1% higher on the session at 30.16% as of 2:55pm. Investors populating BP options are trading call options on the stock more than 2.2 times for each single put option in action. Trading traffic in calls is heaviest at the January $50 strike where more than 18,600 contracts have changed hands. Investors were also seen buying higher-strike calls in the name, with 12,500 calls exchanged at the January $52.5 strike on open interest of just 3,834 lots. The majority of these call options traded on the ask for an average premium of $0.18 each. Bullishness spread to the higher January $55 strike where more than 4,500 calls were picked up at an average premium of $0.05 a-pop. Similar buying patterns were observed in February contract calls, albeit at lower volume. Meanwhile, put options expiring at the end of next week received a good deal of traffic as well. More than 26,500 puts changed hands at the January $47 strike, versus previously existing open interest of just 4,401 contracts. Investors appear to be buying the puts, perhaps to lock in gains, hedge a long position in the underlying shares, or to speculate on a near-term pullback in the price of the underlying. Upwards of 13,100 puts were bought and sold in roughly equal numbers at the closer-to-the-money January $48 strike ahead of the closing bell.…

PepsiCo sees large put volume

Today’s tickers: PEP, XLY, ITT, PFE, HUM, HSY, ERTS & NTRS

PEP PepsiCo, Inc. – The global beverage, snack, and food company’s shares have rallied by more than 1% to stand at $49.75. PEP popped onto our ‘most active by options volume’ market scanner after a large volume bullish transaction was observed in the October contract. One optimistic individual targeted the October 50 strike price and sold 30,000 puts for a premium of 4.20 apiece out of some 35,000 puts sold in total at the strike. There is no existing open interest at the October 50 strike, and thus, the trade represents short selling in anticipation that shares will rise beyond $50.00 by expiration in October. This could also represent a covered put strategy (short stock and sold puts) indicating the investor’s expectation that shares might fall further. At expiration if shares are below the strike the investor would have stock put to him at $50.00 but the premium from the puts effectively reduces that price to $45.80.

XLY Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR – Shares of the ETF have risen by about 0.5% to $22.60 as the ticker edged onto our ‘most active by option volume’ market scanner this afternoon due to one investor who established a ratio put spread in the June contract. It appears that this trader is looking for downside protection on the fund and so bought 12,500 puts at the June 22 strike price for 1.30 apiece spread against the sale of 25,000 puts for 65 cents at the June 20 strike price. The put spread was initiated at no cost the trader given the premium of the respective puts. If shares should decline all the way to $20.00 by expiration this individual will have reeled in the maximum profit of 2.00 possible on the trade. Profits will begin to amass to the downside at any share price below $22.00. Despite carrying a net short put position below a share price of $20.00 losses would not accrue unless shares slipped beneath $18.00, but would rise penny-for-penny thereafter.

ITT ITT Corporation – Shares of the multi-industry company engaged in the design and manufacture of engineered products have remained relatively flat for the day and currently stand at $40.73. ITT appeared on our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner after one investor initiated a sold straddle in the July contract. It appears that the straddle was…

Hybrid Electric Vehicles: A Stay of Execution for NiMH Batteries, Explores IDTechEx

Q4 2020 hedge fund letters, conferences and more

NiMH Batteries Are Still Commonly Used

When we talk about battery-electric vehicles, the lithium-ion battery is dominant; however, for full hybrid electric vehicles (those that have electric-only modes but do not plug-in), NiMH batteries are still the most common battery on the road. With the growing market for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), will this drive further demand for NiMH batteries and stop them from being eliminated from the automotive market?...

Bitcoin achieved a remarkable rise in 2020 in spite of many things that would normally make investors wary, including US-China tensions, Brexit and, of course, an international pandemic. From a year-low on the daily charts of US$4,748 (£3,490) in the middle of March as pandemic fears took hold, bitcoin rose to ju...

Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling System Suggests Market Peak May Be Near

Courtesy of Technical Traders

Our Adaptive Fibonacci Price Modeling system is suggesting a moderate price peak may be already setting up in the NASDAQ while the Dow Jones, S&P500, and Transportation Index continue to rally beyond the projected Fibonacci Price Expansion Levels.  This indicates that capital may be shifting away from the already lofty Technology sector and into Basic Materials, Financials, Energy, Consumer Staples, Utilities, as well as other sectors.

This type of a structural market shift indicates a move away from speculation and towards Blue Chip returns. It suggests traders and investors are expecting the US consumer to come back strong (or at least hold up the market at...

Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia – The Branch COVIDIANS Are Still Burning Down the House

The numbers of new cases in some of the hardest hit COVID19 states have started to plateau, or even decline, over the past few days. A few pundits have noted it and concluded that it was a hopeful sign.

Is it real or is something else going on? Like a restriction in the numbers of tests, or simply the inability to test enough, or are some people simply giving up on getting tested? Because as we all know from our dear leader, the less testing, the less...
