Delta-Neutral Trade Suggests Guarded Optimism on Ventas Ahead of Q2 Earnings

Today’s tickers: VTR, BIDU, WAT, DHI, LCC, ODP, GAP & ISLN

VTR – Ventas, Inc. – Shares of the REIT with a portfolio of seniors housing and healthcare properties in the U.S. and Canada rallied as much as 2.04% this afternoon to reach an intraday- and new 52-week high of $51.57. Ventas popped up on our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner in the second half of the trading session after one cautiously optimistic investor bought a large amount of stock in combination with a delta neutral put spread in the August contract. The transaction shows guarded optimism by one investor ahead of the firm’s second-quarter earnings report scheduled for release ahead of the opening bell on Wednesday morning. The options strategist paid a premium of $1.05 per contract for an 8,500-lot August $40/$50 debit put spread with a .32 delta tied to the purchase of 272,000 Ventas shares at $51.37 each. The investor is hoping to see shares rally to new highs following earnings, but has shelled out extra premium in order to get long downside protection in case Ventas’ shares decline.

BIDU – Baidu, Inc. – The Chinese-language internet search provider’s shares jumped 3.6% to an intraday high of $80.87 today after the firm received an upgrade to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’ with an increased target share price estimate of $92.00 from $69.00 at UBS. Shares were also lifted higher on news Baidu is in talks with mobile phone makers to discuss use of the firm’s search box on devices sold in China. The price of the underlying stock is currently up 2.05% on the day to arrive at $79.67 as of 3:00 pm (ET). Options players itching for continued appreciation in the price of the underlying shares through the end of this month purchased weekly call options on the stock that are set to expire on July 30. Investors picked up 1,000 calls at the July $80 strike for an average premium of $1.48 each. Call buyers at this strike make money if Baidu’s shares rally another 2.3% to trade above the average breakeven price of $81.48 by expiration day. Optimistic individuals looking for BIDU’s shares to hit a new 52-week high before the week is through purchased some 2,100 call options at the higher July $85 strike for an average premium of $0.29 a-pop. Shares must increase at least 7.05% in order for July $85 strike call…

Barrage of Bearish Plays Befall Airgas, Inc.

Today’s tickers: ARG, QSFT, VTR, MET, SPWRA, USO, JPM, BMY, ADI & EXPE

ARG – Airgas, Inc. – Options investors initiated diverse bearish strategies on the distributor of industrial, medical and specialty gases this afternoon with shares of the underlying stock lower by 1.75% to $61.73 as of 3:15 pm (ET). Pessimistic players are likely wary of potential sharp share price erosion should Air Products & Chemicals Inc., the industrial gases maker forging a hostile takeover of Airgas in a proposed $5.1 billion bid for the company, fail to ultimately close the deal. Maybe bearish options investors are taking a cue from Paul Huck, CFO at Air Products & Chemicals, who yesterday stated, “there is a large drop in the stock price awaiting this, should Air Products go away” because “If we go away, who else is going to show up and pay this?” Airgas’s share price, which is up roughly 39% since Air Products’ offer went public ahead of February 5, 2010, would likely come crashing down if for some reason Air Products walks away given the lack of other serious competing offers for ARG at this time. Bearish traders bracing for potential share price hemorrhaging purchased a debit put spread and sold calls in the July contract and enacted a ratio bearish risk reversal in the October contract. One investor purchased 2,925 puts at the July $55 strike for a premium of $1.50 each, and sold the same number of puts at the lower July $50 strike for $0.65 apiece. Net premium paid for the spread amounts to $0.85 per contract, thus yielding maximum potential profits of $4.15 each if Airgas shares decline 19% to breach the $50.00 level by expiration day. The sale of 5,000 calls at the July $65 strike for an average premium of $1.05 each may or may not be the work of the same investor. Open interest of 19,000+ calls at the July $65 strike implies the call seller could be closing out a previously established long stance on the stock. Otherwise, the responsible party expects to keep the $1.05 premium per contract received on the sale as long as shares of the underlying stock do not exceed $65.00 ahead of July expiration. Finally, one pessimistic individual populating the October contract sold 5,000 calls at the October $70 strike for a premium of $1.28 each in order to buy twice as many puts…

Risk Reversal Pops Up on Biotech-Company, Life Technologies

Today’s tickers: LIFE, FL, VTR, WFC, RRI, WFR, CAR, FRX, SWK, BNI & WFR

LIFE – Life Technologies Corp. – Biotechnology company, Life Technologies, popped up on our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner this morning after one investor initiated a risk reversal in the December contract. Shares are relatively flat on the day at $47.58. The reversal is most likely the work of a bullish individual positioning for a rally in shares of LIFE by expiration next month. It appears the trader sold 5,200 puts short at the December 45 strike for an average premium of 1.30 apiece to finance the purchase of the same number of call options at the higher December 50 strike for 1.20 each. The investor receives a credit of 10 cents per contract on the transaction. The 10 cent credit is money in the bank as long as shares remain above $45.00 through expiration. Additional profits on the trade require the stock to surge to a new 52-week high of $50.00. Shares must rally 5% from the current price before the investor begins to accumulate profits. The 10,400 contracts exchanged in the spread represent about 23% of the total existing open interest on LIFE of 45,963 lots.

FL – Foot Locker, Inc. – A long-term bullish play in the January 2011 contract pushed the global retailer of athletic footwear and apparel onto our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner this afternoon. Shares are currently up nearly 1% to $10.25. It looks like the trader initiated a bullish risk reversal by selling 3,500 puts at the December 7.5 strike for 1.10 each, and by buying the same number of calls at the higher December 12.5 strike for 1.10 apiece. The investor put on the trade for free and hopes to see shares rise above $12.50 by expiration in 14 months. Profits begin to accumulate if the stock rallies 22% over the current price to surpass the breakeven point at $12.50. We note that shares of FL have traded beneath $12.50 since November 11, 2008.

VTR – Ventas, Inc. – Shares of the real estate investment trust edged slightly higher by less than 0.25% to $40.56 during the trading day. An investor expecting shares to appreciate by expiration in December put on a bullish risk reversal strategy. The trader sold 3,000 puts at the December 35 strike for 60 cents premium and simultaneously purchased the same…

How The Patient Investor Sees the World More Clearly

How The Patient Investor Sees the World More Clearly

Courtesy of Cullen Roche, Pragmatic Capitalism

?One of my favorite things to think about in investing is the theoretical investor who slept through 1987. We all know about “Black Monday”, the crash of 1987, when stocks fell 23% in one day. It was terrifying. But the craziest thing about 1987 is that the S&P 500 had a total return of 5.81% that year. The stock market was positive in a year that is known for being a terrifying crash! So, if you had checked your portfolio on January 1, 1987 and then slept through the entire year and woken on December 31, you would have looked at your portfolio and said “huh, pretty slow year in the markets, but not bad!”

"Fed Returns To The Punchbowl": The Biggest Surprises In Today's Fed Decision

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

The Fed is returning to the punchbowl.

That's how Bank of America summarized today's second consecutive dovish surprise by the FOMC regarding rates and balance sheet policy. As we noted earlier, there were two major developments in today's FOMC decision:

  1. the dots dropped substantially to show no further hikes this year and only one hike in 2020. This means that the increasingly "patient" Fed is signaling that policy will remain accommodative relative to the long-run rate expectation.
  2. the balance sheet unwind will start in May and be completed by the end of September....

Banks Sending Warning Sign To Broad Markets Again?

Courtesy of Chris Kimble.

The financial / banking sector is often a good barometer of the economy and broader stock market.

So when the Bank Index (BKX) began to lag late last summer, it was an early warning sign for investors.

Looking at the chart below, we can see that the banks spilled lower with the December correction. That final swoon lower was set up by a bearish reversal candlestick (1).

Well, the recent rally has brought stocks back up to the scene of that crime! That area is marked by strong horizontal resistance.

Are banks creating a similar reversal ...

Despacito - How to Make Money the Old-Fashioned Way - SLOWLY!

Are you ready to retire?

For most people, the purpose of investing is to build up enough wealth to allow you to retire.  In general, that's usually enough money to reliably generate a year's worth of your average income, each year into your retirement so that that, plus you Social Security, should be enough to pay your bills without having to draw down on your principle.

Unfortunately, as the last decade has shown us, we can't count on bonds to pay us more than 3% and the average return from the stock market over the past 20 years has been erratic - to say the least - with 4 negative years (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008) and 14 positives, though mostly in the 10% range on the positives.  A string of losses like we had from 2000-02 could easily wipe out a decades worth of gains.

Still, the stock market has been better over the last 10 (7%) an...

It's Not Capitalism, it's Crony Capitalism

A good start from :

It's Not Capitalism, it's Crony Capitalism

Excerpt:

The threat to America is this: we have abandoned our core philosophy. Our first principle of this nation as a meritocracy, a free-market economy, where competition drives economic decision-making. In its place, we have allowed a malignancy to fester, a virulent pus-filled bastardized form of economics so corrosive in nature, so dangerously pestilent, that it presents an extinction-level threat to America – both the actual nation and the “idea” of America.

This all-encompassing mutant corruption saps men’s souls, crushes opportunities, and destroys economic mobility. Its a Smash & Grab system of ill-gotten re...
