Americans Grow Wary of Artificial Intelligence, Gallup Finds
Survey Shows Growing Skepticism Toward AI
Recent polling data reveals a notable shift in how Americans view artificial intelligence. While roughly 70% of respondents report being at least somewhat knowledgeable about AI, the sentiment surrounding its impact has moved decidedly negative. The latest Gallup survey indicates that 39% of adults now expect AI to do more harm than good, a rise from 31% in each of the two prior years.
Younger adults express the greatest concern. Among those aged 18 to 29, 47% anticipate that AI will cause more harm than benefit, illustrating that the demographic most engaged with technology is also the most wary of its potential downsides. This “partial familiarity” appears to amplify focus on the negative aspects, such as privacy risks, energy‑intensive data centers, and headlines about job displacement.
