S&P Global Ratings has assigned Banca Popolare dell’alto Adige SpA (Volksbank) an ESG Evaluation score of 66. The score is a combination of an ESG profile of 66 and an adequate preparedness score. The evaluation reflects Volksbank’s specificities as a regional bank, and factors in the early stage of the bank’s ESG integration.

Volksbank’s ESG Score

  • Volksbank’s ‘E’ score (62) reflects that it is progressing well on developing products and tools to manage its environmental exposure. Its ESG strategy implementation is still nascent, however the bank has developed an ESG tool, which aims to use to assess companies and projects for which funding is requested in line with the EU taxonomy. If successful, it will enable Volksbank to deepen ESG integration in its lending practices.
  • The ‘S’ score (70) reflects Volksbank’s prominent role in the region, which supports good relations with key stakeholders in its value chain. Its strong ties to the community form a strong part of its mission and place it among stronger performing peers.
  • Volksbank’s ‘G’ score (66) reflects its tailored governance structure, which aligns with traditional Italian board structures. However, women hold just 17% of board positions, half of that of local peers, and the bank does not aim to improve board diversity beyond the minimum 33% female participation rate required by regulation from 2022.
  • S&P found Volksbank to be adequately prepared to execute the strategy included in its business plan, and to adapt to the long-term risks and opportunities it faces as a regional bank linked to customer growth, digitalisation and ESG integration. However, the bank has yet to embed ESG more deeply into its strategy and requires further developments in its action plans.
