Some residents of Johnson County, Iowa, will soon get stimulus checks of $1,400. The application deadline for Johnson County’s Direct Assistance Program ended last week, and now, eligible recipients will get stimulus checks from Johnson County. Those eligible for the stimulus checks will get the checks in late June or early July.
Stimulus Checks From Johnson County: Who Will Get Them?
Applications for Johnson County’s Direct Assistance Program opened in the last week of April. The application period ended on May 27. In all, 2,596 people applied for the Direct Assistance Program, which targets low- to moderate-income residents.

Eligible recipients will likely get the stimulus checks from Johnson County of $1,400 by late June or early July. A point to note is that not everyone who applied for the Direct Assistance Program will get the stimulus checks. Authorities will select the recipients on the basis of income and residency.
Johnson County will use the money they got from the American Rescue Plan Act. The county received $29.3 million in ARPA funds.
“We hope that this program will provide the benefits we anticipated it would, which is local economic recovery and stimulation as well as household stabilization,” Donna Brooks, the grants coordinator for Johnson County, told the Press-Citizen. “The community need was there, and this was a worthwhile investment of ARPA resources.”
Direct Assistance Program: Not All Applicants Get Money
Brooks noted that between 2,300 and 2,400 residents will get the stimulus checks. Those who have already applied will get some time to correct any mistakes they might have made on their application.
To be eligible for the stimulus checks from Johnson County, applicants need to demonstrate residency, income, identity, impact from the coronavirus pandemic and participation in one of several programs. You can view the full list of required documentation on the county’s website.
Although between 2,300 and 2,400 residents will get the stimulus checks out of more than 2,500 applicants, it is possible that several hundred applications will be ineligible. In such a case, the country will be left with some money left over. Brooks noted that the unused money will likely be sent back to Iowa City and Coralville.
If there are more applicants than the number of checks in the program, then the authorities will use a lottery system to select the recipients.
Authorities will notify all of the 2,596 applicants of whether or not they are eligible for the stimulus check. In case an application is declared ineligible, the applicant will be given time to make the corrections.
Originally, May 23 was the deadline set for the Direct Assistance Program, but it was extended to May 27 after the county received about 500 new applications in the weekend of May 21-22.
Johnson County will start sending the checks from late June or early July. The checks will be sent out in batches as the auditor’s office can only process about 500 checks a week.
